Did you know that the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy was filmed in New Zealand for its spectacular scenery
This is a 19km trek passing by the volcano best known as Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings! This is rated as New Zealand’s best one day walks. A lot of volcanic activity in this area gives many steaming craters and lakes that are pretty impressive! The trek started off with nice weather conditions but unfortunately this rapidly changed for the worse as the day went on!Everyone was relieved to get to our accommodation that evening!
Mourea- Cultural Maori night
Great evening and night spent here. We went to a Maori family where they informed us of their customs and traditions. They also put on a good song and dance show for us! We also got to learn the Haka! Funniest part of this evening was when I was nominated by our bus to be the chief of our group! This involved having a special seat for the night, giving a little speech to thank the family for having us and some other small tasks throughout the evening!
New Zealand is known as the Adventure Sports Capital of the World which of the following activities would you like to try and why?
Irish place names everywhere!
We were amused by some of the place names we came across like Westport, Killarney and Kilkenny as seen in the photo below. The guy in the photo is Fionn from Kilkenny!
Franz Josef Glacier – South Island
On day 1 here we were due to fly onto the glacier by helicopter. This got canceled due to low cloud cover so we had to settle for a walk to the foot of it!
Mountain Cook is the highest mountain peak in New Zealand
The last stop in the country that is up there as being our favourite stop on this trip. Very sad to see the devastation the earthquake of 2011 has caused in Christchurch. The shops, pubs coffee shops etc that have set up in ship containers in the centre of the city were pretty cool!
